iSLanDS lecturer addresses Indian government officials at prestigious disability conference
Deaf people’s lack of equal access to transport in India was highlighted at a high-level conference last week by our senior lecturer Sibaji Panda alongside the president of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). They addressed the Equality+20 conference in New Delhi, with an audience including government ministers, describing how deaf people still face formidable barriers to transport, including no access to announcements, very little visual information, and ticket counters where speech is the only accepted method of communication. They also discussed the urgent need for more sign language teachers and interpreters in their talk on Wednesday, which was covered by the press. We would like to congratulate Sibaji and NAD president A.S. Narayanan for their well-received presentation.
