iSLanDS members at Japan conference
Three iSLanDS staff members gave presentations at the Signed and Spoken Language Linguistics (SSLL) Festa at Minpaku 2013 in Osaka, Japan, from 27-29 September. Research officer Keiko Sagara gave a workshop called Number Systems in Sign Languages and research fellow Nick Palfreyman delivered a lecture entitled The Syntax of Negation and Completion in Indonesian Sign Language Varieties. Professor Ulrike Zeshan, director of iSLanDS, gave a talk with Dr Mandana Seyfeddinipur from University College London on fieldwork guidelines for spoken language researchers who want to begin studying and documenting sign languages.
Word order was the main topic at the three-day conference, which included workshops and a symposium. Sessions covered word order in individual signed and spoken languages as well as typologically. Keiko’s presentation was from a typological perspective, while Nick focussed on Indonesian sign language varieties specifically.
