iSLanDS role in setting up national sign language centre in India

31 July, 2011

The Indian government has announced the creation of India’s first national sign language centre. The Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) will be established as an autonomous centre under the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), our partner institution in a number of joint research and teaching initiatives. The Indian government’s choice of establishing the ISLRTC at IGNOU builds on the development of our dual-award BA in Applied Sign Language Studies, which in turn is the result of our research collaboration since 2008. See the government announcement at We look forward to continue working with the Indian deaf organisations, whose political efforts have resulted in this important government initiative.
