Sign languages at UNESCO meeting on endangered languages
This week I participated in an expert committee meeting at UNESCO, a 3-day meeting in Paris. The main aim of the meeting was to plan actions and tools for assessing and supporting endangered languages – this line of work has been going on since 2003 at UNESCO. This was the first time that sign languages were represented, so it was very important. I gave a presentation on the edangerment of sign languages, and many of the participants started thinking about sign languages for the first time. UNESCO has produced an atlas of endangered languages, and at the meeting, we agreed that endangered sign languages will be added. I was in touch with WFD before the meeting, and I will send a full report back to WFD asap.
